The Four Living Creatures, or the Full Revelation of Jesus: The Ox
Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
— Revelation 19:15
Scripture says of Israel: “God brings him out of Egypt; He has strength like a wild ox; He shall consume the nations, his enemies; He shall break their bones And pierce them with his arrows.” [Num.24:8] Israel is the most striking character revealing Jesus as God’s servant and His elect. [Isa.45:4] “There you go, it’s written that the Jewish people are God’s elect.” “Moshe, sit down and calm down, and stop waving that rag with the Red Sea on it. We’re not looking at human flesh and blood here, but at God’s Elect and His blood. And if you have any doubts, open Romans chapter 9 and read that they are not all Israel who are of Israel. That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God.” [Rom.9:8]
Israel and Moses are types of God’s law and of His wrath. So if we look long at the face of the Ox, the Holy Spirit, with the sword that goes out of His mouth, will cut to pieces the false teachings and religious dogmas that keep God’s children in bondage. It’s interesting how Jesus behaved when He overturned the tables, or when the Lord spoke with Moses and His anger blazed like a consuming fire. This anger is of course directed not at us, for the Lord has sworn not to be angry with us, but at our enemies — the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places, who are the authors of all these false teachings. And if the Wild Ox is for us, who can be against us? :)
The name Israel means prince of God. The prophet Isaiah calls Jesus the Prince of Peace. [Isa.9:6] When the Prince of Peace destroys false teachings with His sharp sword and reveals the truth, peace and rest come to the heart. The constant struggle for survival ends. Joy and laughter fill every cell of the body. That is why, when Jesus opened the second seal of the scroll, the second living creature [the Ox] said: “Come and see. Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth…” [Rev.6:3-4] By removing this seal, the spirit of constant struggle, from our lives, the Lord makes us lie down in green pastures and leads us beside the still waters.
Characters who reveal Jesus as the Ox, or Saviour: [Israel, Moses, Joseph, Cyrus, the judges of Israel — not as rulers, but as deliverers of God’s people from bondage]
