The Torn Veil, or Let’s Not Divide the Inner Man
For a tabernacle was prepared: the first part, in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the sanctuary; and behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of All
— Hebrews 9:2-3
The tabernacle of Moses is a very good type of our Lord Jesus Christ. There are many different details in the tabernacle that point to our Saviour’s work and to His person. Sometimes the tabernacle is given as an example to prove that man is threefold. The visible tent is the body, the holy place is the soul, and the Holy of Holies is the spirit. In the Old Testament there was a division between the holy place and the Holy of Holies, and only the high priest had access there, and even then only once a year. What does this division say? That before the cross man had no access to the Spirit within him. People were anointed with the Holy Spirit, or the Holy Spirit rested upon them, but there was no access within.
These two rooms were separated by the veil. Scripture says that the veil is the body of Jesus Christ. [Heb.10:20] When Jesus died on the cross and gave up His spirit, God tore the veil from top to bottom. [Mat.27:51] By tearing this veil, God removed the division between the holy place and the Holy of Holies. Now it is one big hall. A believer, for example, can pray with the mind, as in the Old Testament — the altar of incense in the holy place [Exd.30:6] — and with the spirit — the altar in the Holy of Holies. [Heb.9:4]
So if God, through the body of Jesus, removed the division between soul and spirit, let us not divide the inner man into a righteous spirit and a sinful or imperfect soul. The division is no more. One part of the hall cannot be holy and another part unclean. Even in the Old Testament, the place that symbolises the soul was called holy, because it was cleansed with the blood of bulls and goats. [Heb.9:21] How much more today, when our inner man has been cleansed with the blood of the Son of God. Our whole inner man is clean and holy, and now the Holy Spirit dwells there, and our body is His temple, which is holy too. [1 Cor.6:19] That is why it is written that God has sanctified us completely [1 Ths.5:23], and all thanks to the blood of the Lamb of God.
