…I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Abundant life is usually understood to mean a blessed family, divine health and success in everything we do. These are all good things, but in fact they are not abundant life. They are God’s blessings with which God has blessed us. [Eph.1:3] The question is where and how He has blessed us, and what this abundant life is.

Jesus said: “I am the resurrection and the life.” [Jhn.11:25], and Paul also wrote about “Christ who is our life“. [Col.3:4] Jesus Himself is this abundant life. Right after He said that He had come so that we might have life more abundantly, He said: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” [Jhn.10:11] He gave us Himself. And when we have Jesus, we already have everything. We are already blessed with every blessing of heaven in HIM. The blessings are secondary. He is primary. Even the verse many people love: “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” [Rom.8:32] is often understood like this: “Well, if He gave His Son, won’t He give us health, which is less than the Son?” But in fact it says “with Him also freely give”, so it sounds something like this: “He gave the Son, and in the Son there is already everything: divine health, a happy family, prosperity and all the other blessings.”

So when we have Jesus, we already have abundant life! Amen!
