Grace, Grace!
Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain! And he shall bring forth the capstone With shouts of “Grace, grace to it!”
— Zechariah 4:7
Zechariah saw in a vision a lampstand with seven lamps [a menorah], and on each side of the menorah there was an olive tree. The picture is very much like a nine-branched lampstand. Zechariah asked: “What are these?” The angel answered: “‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the LORD of hosts. ‘Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain! And he shall bring forth the capstone With shouts of “Grace, grace to it!”‘” [Zec.4:6-7]
The name Zerubbabel means “one who came out of Babylon” [Babylon: mixture, confusion]. The Lord says that he will bring forth the capstone with shouts of “Grace, grace to it!” What does all this mean? The Bible says that Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone. [Eph.2:20] In other words, when telling people about God [Christ], you can paint this picture: “God demands obedience, sends trials, teaches by pointing out your shortcomings, wants us to serve Him and, of course, not to sin.” All of this is the picture of God that is painted in Babylon.
But the one who has come out of Babylon brings forth the capstone [Christ] with nothing but shouts of: “Grace, grace to it!” Here, in the promised land [the place of rest], they know only one Jesus — full of grace and truth, who fulfilled all of God’s requirements, went through all the trials for our sake, said Himself that He came to serve us and not to be served, and never once sinned, so that the Father would regard us as sinless. To Him be all the glory!
