What Kind of Covenant Is the New Covenant?
“And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.’“
–Luke 22:19,20
The Covenant of Freedom
“Behold! My Servant (Jesus) whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! … I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the Gentiles, To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the prison, Those who sit in darkness from the prison house. I am the LORD, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.” [Isa.42:1-8; Luk.4:18-20]
The Covenant of Peace (Shalom)
“For this is like the waters of Noah to Me; For as I have sworn That the waters of Noah would no longer cover the earth, So have I sworn That I would not be angry with you, nor rebuke you. For the mountains shall depart And the hills be removed, But My kindness shall not depart from you, Nor shall My covenant of peace (shalom) be removed, Says the LORD, who has mercy on you. O you afflicted one, Tossed with tempest, and not comforted, Behold, I will lay your stones with colorful gems, And lay your foundations with sapphires. I will make your pinnacles of rubies, Your gates of crystal, And all your walls of precious stones. All your children shall be taught by the LORD, And great shall be the peace of your children. In righteousness you shall be established; You shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear; And from terror, for it shall not come near you. Indeed they shall surely assemble, but not because of Me. Whoever assembles against you shall fall for your sake. Behold, I have created the blacksmith Who blows the coals in the fire, Who brings forth an instrument for his work; And I have created the spoiler to destroy. No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their righteousness is from Me, Says the LORD.” [Isa.54:9-17]
“I will establish one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them; My servant David (Jesus). He shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I, the LORD, will be their God, and My servant David a prince among them; I, the LORD, have spoken. I will make a covenant of peace (shalom) with them, and cause wild beasts to cease from the land; and they will dwell safely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods. I will make them and the places all around My hill a blessing; and I will cause showers to come down in their season; there shall be showers of blessing. Then the trees of the field shall yield their fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase. They shall be safe in their land; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bands of their yoke and delivered them from the hand of those who enslaved them. And they shall no longer be a prey for the nations, nor shall beasts of the land devour them; but they shall dwell safely, and no one shall make them afraid. I will raise up for them a garden of renown, and they shall no longer be consumed with hunger in the land, nor bear the shame of the Gentiles anymore…” [Ezk.34:23-29; Eph.1:3]

The Covenant of Complete Forgiveness, Justification and the Putting Away of Sins
“Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah … But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law (the law of love) [Jhn.13:14; 1 Jhn.2:8-11; Gal.6:2] in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more. Thus says the LORD… The LORD of hosts (the Lord of armies, the Almighty) is His name.” [Jer.31:31-35; Heb.8:8-12]
“For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another; He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.” [Heb.9:24-26]
For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember NO MORE” (in Greek, a double negative: by no means remember)
Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin. Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope (grace, the finished work of Christ) without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” [Heb.10:14-23]
“Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.” [Isa.1:18] “As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us…” [Ps.103:12]
A great deal more could be written, but it seems to me that in this case there is no point, because the Scripture speaks for itself.
The only thing I want to add is that this covenant – the covenant of freedom, of peace, and of the complete forgiveness and putting away of sin – God made with us without asking our permission. He did it as a loving Father who knows that His foolish children do not understand for themselves what is good for them. And thank God that He did it exactly this way: independently of us!
